The safeguarding and protection of children is everyone's business. If there are concerns that a child or young person may be being abused, neglected, or exploited, action needs to be taken to investigate, stop, or prevent maltreatment.

Members of the Public 

If a child is at immediate risk of harm, call the police on 999.

The Cheshire East Consultation Service (CHECS) is the ‘front door’ for access to services, support and advice for children and their families, from early help and support through to safeguarding and child protection.

A social worker will take details of your concerns and advise you of the next steps.

Professionals

If you are a professional making a referral you must complete a screening tool to pinpoint areas of concerns before consulting CHECS.

• Talk to your safeguarding lead, or talk to your manager
• In an emergency contact the Police national enquiries telephone number 101 - this will re-route your call to your local Police Constabulary.
• Consider what you know about the reasons for concern about the child.
• Consider the actions you or anyone else took
• Consider what was decided when you sought advice
• Store records securely as confidential
