Beyond the Obvious: Professional Curiosity, Critical Thinking & Professional Challenge
2.5 Hour Multi-Agency Learning Event
Open to practitioners from Children's Social Care, Health, Education, Police, Early Help and Partner Agencies
Why does professional curiosity matter?
- When serious incidents involving children are reviewed, the same themes often emerge:
- Missed opportunities
- Assumptions replacing enquiry
- Children's lived experiences not fully understood
- Concerns not appropriately challenged
Professional curiosity, critical thinking and professional challenge remain some of the most important skills in safeguarding practice. The training materials highlight how case review learning repeatedly identifies the need to better understand children's lived experiences, challenge assumptions and ask the "second question".
This practical session will help you:
- Recognise and apply professional curiosity in everyday practice
- Strengthen critical thinking and analysis
- Understand how assumptions, bias and professional optimism can influence decision-making
- Develop confidence to respectfully challenge and escalate concerns
- Focus on children's lived experiences and what life is really like for them
- Apply learning from local and national safeguarding reviews
- Build stronger multi-agency relationships through relational practice
- Reflect on how Family First reforms and relationship-based practice support better outcomes for children and families
